Biography

Dr Charlotte 'Charlie' Johnson moved to New Zealand in September 2017 to start work for The University of Auckland as the photographer within the School of Biological Sciences (SBS). She is trained in both digital and film photography, with a passion for capturing fine art portraits in her spare time.

Charlie completed her Ph.D in cancer research at Cardiff University, Wales, UK before continuing there as a postdoctoral research associate. Her research involved the use of high powered microscopes and multiple techniques, including fluorescence staining of live and fixed cells and spheroids, laser confocal microscopy, z-stacking and tiling. She now uses these skills to assist with management of the light microscopy suite within SBS.

Distinctions/Honours

Certified Adobe Photoshop CC expert.

Winner of the BIRU Annual Image Competition 2017, Light Microscopy catagory and Overall Winner.

Certified in Outdoor First Aid.

Responsibilities

Photographic services within SBS. 

Management of the Leica DMR and DMRE microscopes in the SBS light microscopy suite and the entire light microscopy suite in the absence of Adrian Turner.

Management of the Operetta high content imaging system.

 

Areas of expertise

Specialist in digital photography and editing. Camera loans and training available. 

Film photography, including 35mm and medium format, black and white film processing and printing. Darkroom and training available. 

Skilled in the use of light microscopes, including fluorescence and confocal. Training available. 

Experienced in both live and fixed cell staining and imaging. Experimental troubleshooting available.
