Biography

Associate Professor Gavin Hipkins teaches fine arts including photography and moving image in Elam School of Fine Arts at the University of Auckland. His specialist teaching, supervisory and research areas are in the fields of landscape and postcolonial theory; digital montage and discourses of hybridity; photo and filmic experimental narrative structures. He has exhibited widely in New Zealand and internationally over the last two decades, working in expanded photographic series and experimental cinema. In 2014, Hipkins’ first feature film Erewhon — an essay adaptation of Samuel Butler’s 1872 novel Erewhon, Or Over the Range — premiered at the New Zealand International Film Festival and Edinburgh Art Festival. In 2017, the Dowse Art Museum staged a major survey of his work with an accompanying book published by Victoria University Press. His video installation The Precinct (2018) was commissioned by the Queensland Art Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) for the 2018 Asia Pacific Triennale of Contemporary Art (APT 9) in Brisbane. His work is included in major public collections including the Queensland Art Gallery, the Auckland Art Gallery, Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, San Diego Museum of Photographic Arts, and George Eastman Museum of Photography and Film, Rochester, New York. Recent group exhibitions and film screenings include: Recontres Internationales Paris/Berlin, 2020; New Zealand International Film Festival, 2020; Anthology Film Archives, New York, 2019; International Film Festival Rotterdam, 2018; Internationale Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen, 2017.
