I study the history of volcanoes for the purpose understanding why they erupt and forecasting likely future precursor and eruption phenomena. Current investigations include:

(1) The rhyolite eruptive history of the Okataina Volcanic Centre, including magma longevity via U-Th geochronology of zircons; mineralogical and geochemical studies of eruption triggering and magma-mixing.

(2) Ascent and eruption of basaltic magmas in the Bay of Islands and Whangarei via mineral thermobarometry.

(3) Volcano magmatic evolution via Sr isotopes in plagioclase from andesite volcanoes of the Tongariro volcanic centre; and studies in Dominica and St Lucia.

(4) The eruptive history of the basaltic Auckland Volcanic Field via deep volcano drilling; tephra layers in ancient lake sediments.

(5) Marine tephrochronology of Kermadec arc and NZ volcanoes
