Professor Simon Malpas

Simon Malpas is a graduate of Victoria University and the University of Otago. Simon undertook postdoctoral research in Japan, UK and Australia before returning to New Zealand in 1996 to an academic position in the Department of Physiology. He joined the Auckland Bioengineering Institute in the same year.

Simon's long term collaboration with David Budgett lead to the development of implantable devices for monitoring neural signals. This research was later commercialised through the spin-out company, Telemetry Research Ltd. In 2012 Telemetry Research was sold to Millar Instruments of Houston, Texas. Simon is Chief Scientific Officer for the company and on the board of directors.

Millar maintains a strong research and development programme which collaborates with the Auckland Bioengineering Institute's research team to produce novel medical devices. The telemetry systems developed from these research programmes have been exported to over 30 countries and led to a rapid growth in revenue.

Simon Malpas and David Budgett established a new company, Kaha Sciences Ltd in 2018 which is focused on telemetry technology for life sciences. Simon is a non-excutive director in Kaha and a member of the Institute of Directors. In 2018 he was made a fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand.
