Dr Alex Muntz

PhD, Vision Science; MSc, Optometry

Biography

Alex comes from Transylvania (a real place indeed) and trained as an optometrist in Germany. As a research assistant and scientific delegate for the JENVIS Research Institute, he was involved in industry-driven contact lens research. With an MSc in Optometry and Vision Science from the Ernst Abbe University in Jena, Germany, he relocated to Canada, to pursue a Ph.D. in Vision Science at the University of Waterloo. Working as a clinical scientist at the Centre for Ocular Research and Education, he investigated clinical and biological aspects of ocular dryness and discomfort, under the supervision of Lyndon Jones and Lakshman Subbaraman. In May 2018, he joined the University of Auckland as a post-doctoral research fellow in the Ocular Surface Research Group. Together with Associate Professor Jennifer Craig and her team, they are on a mission to investigate clinical and epidemiological aspects, as well as develop and improve diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for dry eye disease.
