Biography

Dr Alan Cameron is an Associate Investigator in the Maurice Wilkins Centre CoRE, a former Lottery Health Research Fellow and currently holds a Marsden Fast-Start award and AMRF Project Grant.

My research focuses on synthetic and medicinal chemistry, in particular within peptide chemisty. I am interested in developing new techniques for assembling and modifying peptides/proteins with improved bioactivity profiles. Applying these chemical methods we seek to develop new treatments in infectious disease and cancer. Recently our research has extended to include developing novel biactive compounds with potential use in biosecurity and to control pathogens in primary industries (e.g. aquaculture, agriculture and forestry).

One of our recent achievments in this area includes the development of a strategy to modify peptides with an allenamide functional group as a chemoselective reactive hande, thus providing a new tool for peptide cyclisation, stapling or lipidation - important approaches in modern drug discovery.

We are currently developing cyclic, lipidated and stapled peptide antibiotics to treat multi-drug resistant Gram negative and Gram positive infections, recurrent Group A Streptococcal infection, COVID-19. Our approaches to infectious disease are now aiming to break beyond the scope of traditional medicines and develop cell permeable antimicrobials and selective antimicrobial therapy strategies that minimise collateral harm from interferring with the healthy microbiome. We are also developing therapeutic vaccines for HBV and cancer.
