Biography

Bryan graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the USA, with a Bachelor of Science (SB) in 2004, a Master of Science (SM) in 2006, and a PhD in 2012, all specialising in Mechanical Engineering. His doctoral research, supervised by Professor Ian W. Hunter in the MIT BioInstrumentation Laboratory, focused on the design and modelling of compact, high-force linear electric motors for use in robotics and in medical devices.

Bryan joined the Auckland Bioengineering Institute as a Research Scientist upon the completion of his PhD, in July 2012. He currently holds a joint appointment as a Senior Research Fellow at the ABI and as a Senior Lecturer with the Department of Engineering Science.
 

Research | Current

Bryan's work focuses on the development of miniaturized actuation and control systems for use in muscle work-loop calorimetry (the Cardiac Myometer), the design of improved Lorentz-force motors for needle-free jet injection, and the design of high-performance linear synchronous motors for rehabilitation robots and exoskeletons. To accomplish these goals, he works to develop new analytical solutions to the governing equations of these actuators, and uses them for design optimization.
