Ms Cherie May Appleton
MSW, DipSocWk, DipT&D, DipBusStudies, MANZASW
Cherie is a registered social worker and member of Aotearoa New Zealand Association of Social Workers (ANZASW). She has practiced as a social worker, supervisor, manager and educator/consultant in a variety of social service settings for the past 32 years, both in Aotearoa New Zealand and overseas. Including: Women's Centre and Women's Refuge, in a Youth Opportunities Scheme in Brighton UK, Residential social work, Court work, and Statutory Child Protection and Youth Justice, as a social worker, supervisor, coordinator and trainer.
In 2002 Cherie undertook consultancy to Department of Social Welfare and Development Philippines on the Philippines Domestic Violence Project and was commissioned by Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) to carry out a training needs analysis in Manila and design a 'Training for Trainers' programme for selected Filipino social workers in New Zealand.
From 2003 - 2005 Cherie was Project Manager for implementation of Strengths Based Philosophies and Training in a Learning Lab site at Child Youth and Family Services Tauranga.
Cherie has been involved in planning, organising and implementing several major national and international social work conferences and in bringing international speakers to Aotearoa New Zealand. Cherie is committed to lifelong learning and enjoys facilitation, consultancy partnerships, presenting and engaging at conferences, congresses and workshop events. Cherie is a member of an international 'signs of safety' network dedicated to evolving and implementing strengths based solution focused practice in social service settings globally.
In 2008 Cherie joined the Faculty of Education in a .6 capacity to contribute to the Bachelor of Social Work Programme and the Master of Social Work (Professional). Cherie leads the Practice Learning Team in coordination of Field Work Education Programme in years 3 and 4 of the BSW degree and years 1 and 2 of the MSW(P) and lectures on a variety of papers. Cherie has a passion for social work, education and learning and is delighted to be engaged in contributing to supporting and encouraging the continuing professional development of social workers.
Research | Current
Cherie’s MSW thesis researched social workers’ understanding and application of the concept of Integrity. Her major current research interests include:
- Fieldwork education in social work
- Transfer of learning
- Building ethically robust practice frameworks
- Enhancing student learning
- Developing ‘use of self’ through mindfulness techniques.
Additional areas of ongoing interest include:
- International issues in the protection of children and young people
- Management and leadership in the social services
- Emotional intelligence in supervision practice
