Greg Sands is a graduate of the University of Auckland, and studied in the Department of Engineering Science. In 1996 he completed his PhD under the supervision of Professor Peter Hunter, which established new methods for computer models of cardiac electrophysiology applicable to deforming geometries.

Following that, he has undertaken post-doctoral research in both the Department of Physiology and in the Auckland Bioengineering Institute, separated by several years working for UniServices. His research has continued to focus on the relationship between cardiac structure and its electrical and mechanical function, and has included experimental and clinical research, as well as computer simulation and mathematical modelling.

More recently, his main area of research has been the imaging of cardiac structure, including the development of novel extended-volume confocal imaging systems, as well as image analysis techniques which enable the use of image data in computational models.

Research | Current

Greg is currently employed under an HRC programme grant which is investigating the links between cardiac structure and electrical function, particularly relating to atrial and ventricular arrhythmia.  This involves a mix of experimental work, imaging, and computer modelling.

Greg is also involved with other projects that use extended-volume confocal imaging to acquire data for computer models.
