Professor Krishnan Jayaraman

PhD, ME, BE(Hons)


Krishnan Jayaraman received his bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering with Honours from the University of Madras, India in 1984. He graduated with a masters degree in Mechanical Engineering from Howard University, USA in 1986 and a PhD in Engineering Mechanics from Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University, USA in 1992.

He was a Research Associate in the Materials Response Group of Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University from 1992 to 1993 and a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Pulp and Paper Centre of the University of Toronto, Canada from 1993 to 1995. He became a lecturer in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Auckland in 1995 and was promoted to the position of Professor in 2019. He is currently the Head of the Department.

Research | Current

The focus of my research is the manufacturing of lignocellulosic composites or biocomposites.
My specialties are the production of composite materials from plant fibres and synthetic polymers/biopolymers or soil-cement/cement and the establishment of the microstructure-material property relationships for these materials.
Plant fibres possess good reinforcing capability when properly compounded with polymers. Addition of plant fibres to soil-cement/cement can significantly enhance the ductility of the resulting composites.
