My doctoral research investigates the way that heterosexual Pacific mothers and fathers living in Aotearoa New Zealand experience and enact familial life in the context of separation. More specifically, I examine the way in which parental obligations for care and support are negotiated between parents and within extended family networks. It also analyses Pacific mothers’ and fathers’ post-separation parenting and care practices, looking at how embedded their former partners and extended families are in the enactment of these practices. Focusing exclusively on the experiences of Pacific mothers and fathers facilitates a discussion of how ethnicity and gender intersect, interact and overlap in ways that come to shape mothers’ and fathers’ understandings, expectations and experiences of everyday post-separation familial life in contemporary societies.
