Professor Raid Ghassan Alany


Raid received his B.Sc. in Pharmacy (1986) and M.Sc. in Pharmaceutical Chemistry (1992) from the College of Pharmacy, Baghdad University, Baghdad, Iraq. He was awarded his PhD in Pharmaceutics from the University of Otago, Dunedin New Zealand in 2001. Raid was appointed as a Lecturer at the School of Pharmacy, The University of Auckland, Auckland, New Zealand, in 2001, and was responsible for establishing the first pharmaceutics curriculum at The University of Auckland. He was promoted to a Senior Lecturer in 2004, appointed as Head of Pharmaceutics in 2007 and promoted to Senior Lecturer above the bar in Feb. 2009. Raid has been registered as a Pharmacist in New Zealand since July 1999 and became a Fellow of the New Zealand College of Pharmacists in 2003. Raid leads a research team comprising seven PhD and three Master students working on a range of formulation and drug delivery projects. He is an author on over 150 scientific research publications (papers and abstracts), three book chapters and has attracted over $NZ 1.7M in contestable research funding. Raid serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Drug Delivery Science and Technology, International Journal of Drug Delivery and acts as a Section Editor for Clinical and Experimental Ophthalmology. He is the President of the New Zealand Chapter of the Controlled Release Society (NZCRS), member of the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP), Australasian Pharmaceutical Scientists Association (APSA) and Scientific Steering Group of the New Zealand National Eye Centre (NZ-NEC). Raid won several awards such as Microscopy New Zealand Young Scientists Award in 1999 The University of Auckland’s Vice Chancellor’s Early Career Research Excellence Award in 2003 and the Controlled Release Society Veterinary Programme co-chair/ chair Distinguished Service Awards in 2008/2009. He consults for human and veterinary pharmaceutical companies in New Zealand and Singapore and is an inventor on several international patents. Raid's research has been featured on several occasions in the media (Pharmacy Today, New Zealand Pharmacy, CRS and AIMA podcasts).
