Biography

Sochanny Hak, from Cambodia, attended the PhD programme in  Development Studies in February 2017. Before attending the programme, she was a development practitioner and has extended experience in social research in Cambodia. Her recent experience was on Participatory Action Research with floating communities around The Tonle Sap Lake in Cambodia. By participating in the Development Studies programme, Sochanny has a unique opportunity to widen and deepen her research interest around land grabbing, gender, and social movements. It also provides her the chance to go back to the indigenous Bunong communities where she left since 2012 to conduct the fieldwork for her PhD project. 

Research | Current

Doctoral thesis: Land Exclusions, Livelihoood Transitions and Gendered Responses: The Case of Bunong People in Srae Preah Commune, Cambodia. 

Supervisors: Professor Andreas Neef and Associate Professor Yvonne Underhill-Sem

Sochanny's research will examine how gendered social relations shape responses to land exclusions in Bunong villages of Srae Preah commune in Mondulkiri province, Cambodia. It will first explore forms and manifestations of land exclusions and gendered responses. I will adopt feminist political ecology approach to investigate how gendered social relations insect with gender, ethnicity, culture, class, and power dynamic shaping the responses to land exclusions.
