Dr Susann Wiedlitzka

PhD in Criminology, University of Queensland


Susann is a Lecturer in Criminology at the University of Auckland. After completing a doctorate in criminology at the University of Queensland (Australia), she was appointed as a research fellow and then lecturer at the University of Sussex (UK). Susann also completed a Master of Arts in International Criminology at the University of Hamburg (Germany) and a Bachelor of Science in Social Sciences with a concentration in Criminal Justice at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo (USA).

Research | Current

  • Co-Investigator on “Online interventions for reducing hate speech and cyberhate: A systematic review” (with Dr Steven Windisch and Dr Ajima Olaghere)
  • Co-Investigator on “Criminal Cases Review Commission: Legal aid and legal representatives” (Prof Richard Vogler, Dr Lucy Welsh, and Dr Liz McDonnell)

Susann is also currently exploring online platforms and far-right extremist responses to ‘in real life (IRL)’ attacks. She previously worked as a research fellow on a ‘Policing Hate Crime’ project, which investigated whether a direct connection between activity on social media platforms and offline hate crime incidents exists. Susann also worked on an EU DG Justice-funded research study on hate crime, which examined the application of criminal laws and sentencing provisions for hate crime across five EU Member States.
