My current research is to evaluate the response of the adult human visual cortex to glaucoma and ischaemic optic neuropathy using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). fMRI is a non-invasive technique, which allows for recordings of the brain’s activity to be made while people are performing different tasks. This powerful tool will be used to evaluate the structural and functional changes that occur to the visual areas of the brain following injury to the optic nerve, which propagates information from the eye to the brain.

This work will increase our understanding of the potential for plasticity of the brain following different types of injury and consequently inform new and innovative treatment modalities.
