Vickie is a Senior Research Fellow at the Auckland Bioengineering Institute. She completed her PhD in finite element modelling of the hip joint and hip implants at the University of Auckland in 2007.

Since then, she has been conducting various researches related to the musculoskeletal system both in modelling and bioinstrumentation at the Auckland Bioengineering Institute. In recent years, she has expanded her research into the human brain, especially traumatic brain injuries to characterize the injury mechanisms and possible preventative and therapeutic solutions. 

Research | Current

The main theme of her research is biomechanical and mechanobiologcial responses of the human musculoskeletal and nervous systems nunder physiological and traumatic conditions 

a) to identify injury mechanisms 

b) to develop new and/or improve current treatment options.

Vickie's projects are clinically oriented and conducted in close collaborations with a number of research and clinical groups in New Zealand and overseas. She uses multi-disciplinary and muliti-scale approaches to tackle these problems, which include:

  • Finding objective diagnosis and therapeutic targets for traumatic brain injuries,
  • Finding links between knee injuries and osteoarthritis,
  • Mechanobiology of Achilles tendinopathy for tissue engineering applications,
  • Hip joint fracture prediction and osteosynthesis with computational models,
  • Scarless wound healing and skin tissue engineering.
