Research | Current

The subject of my PhD research is Stimuli-responsive Supramolecular Flowers. Utilising both organic and inorganic chemistry techniques, a series of 2-petal supramolecular flowers will be synthesised and fully characterised, modelled by the molecule ferrocene. These molecules will be constructed from two different metal centres that are connected through bridging petal linkers. The combination and suitability of different ligands and metals will be explored to develop stimuli-responsive systems in which the petals will reversibly open and close initiated by external stimuli, such as changes in pH, light or redox processes. The release of cisplatin from these cage molecules will be used as a model system to investigate drug encapsulation on the cell accumulation and biological activity in cancer cells.
